“Let’s start with two important things that we want you to remember as you go through this book

and learn to play the harmonica.

First, music is supposed to be fun. In this regard, playing the harmonica is no different from playing

any other musical instrument. It’s safe to assume that you didn’t decide to play the harmonica

to add to your stress levels, so although we’ve approached the harmonica as a serious instrument

requiring practice and commitment, we’ve also tried to not take our instrument or ourselves too seriously.

We encourage you to do likewise.

Please feel free to go through this book as quickly or slowly as you choose, and practice as much or

as little as suits you. No one is going to chastise you for not practicing every day. There are no tests

to be passed or failed. If you don’t let this new hobby become another job, you just might stick

with it long enough to get pretty good.

Second, playing the harmonica is all about emotion and spontaneity springing from the depths of

your heart and soul. Technique, while critically important to getting that righteous sound, has always

been secondary. We will teach you the technique you need to play the harmonica very well.

We will try to take you beyond merely reading or playing the music—all the way to feeling the

music. However, when all is said and done and you’ve dutifully practiced your way through all the

chapters, the music you make will come just as much from what’s inside of you as from the pages

of this book. So, by all means, let your inside out.”
