This rigorous study addresses the question of why Scottish workers appear to have a more radical industrial social climate than the British mainland. Analyzing a wealth of social statistics from Scotland, Wales, and militant regions of Britain, it is concluded that while Scottish workers are no different than their counterparts in the rest of Britain, the added importance of "the national question" in Scotland indicates that an increased sense of national identity is the primary reason why the country appears to have a more radical point of view.
