Reviews“Warmly written... lucid and humanely engaging."
-- The Guardian
"This book fills an important niche between academic analyses of the meaning of life and overly popularized ‘tips for good living’. I’ve read quite a few books in this area and there is more insight, wit, and wisdom per page in this one book than in almost any of the others."
-- Edward Langerak, St Olaf College
"The Weight of Things is clear, provocative, tightly-argued, and rich with memorable examples. Written in an informal yet careful style, this examination of how we ought to live is philosophically acute and a delight to read."
-- Marcia McKelligan, DePauw University
“Kazez provides a bracing forum for engagement [and] presents a framework within which readers may contemplate their own ideas. Fluid writing, accompanied by a provocative thesis.”
-- Choice Magazine
Deeply Satisfying
The "Weight of Things", by Jean Kazez, is about defining the elements that comprise a good life (not necessarly the "life of Riley", which implies easy money and little responsibility)and incorporating them into a life that is worthwhile, meaningful, and satisfying. As most of us seek such a life, but don't have the wisdom or knowledge of significant philosophers to help us out, this book is a wonderful and thoughtful resource. Kazez helps us to see the relevance of philosophy to living the good life, and teaches us how to think about how we live, and to understand that each person must find his or her own way to incorporate those important elements. I urge anyone interested in living a satisfying life to read this book - and it's not scholarly in an off-putting sort of way - Plato's philosophy is as accessible as Popeye's. "The Weight of Things" is a wonderful read!”
About the Author“Jean Kazez received a PhD in philosophy from the University of Arizona in 1991. She divides her time between writing and adjunct teaching at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she lives with her husband and two children. ”
