The GALA (Grunenthal Applied Life science data Analysis) project is a collaborative effort between the Computer-Chemie-Centrum, Erlangen, the pharmaceutical company Grunenthal GmbH, Aachen (the project sponsor), Molecular Networks GmbH, Erlangen and the Forschungszentrum Julich to develop a new, more efficient methodology for drug candidate selection.

The project goals for the Computer-Chemie-Centrum are:

Development of a web-based tool that integrates different methods of searching chemistry databases (based on the Oracle DBMS system), visualization of 2D/3D molecular structures and properties, and data analysis, both on a 2D and a 3D representation of chemical structures.

The employed data analysis methods include primarily statistics and a large number of data mining algorithms. As a part of the software development process novel models for data description, abstraction and manipulation are being created.
