ThebookDiagenesisinSediments was publishedin1967, almosta hundred years after introduction ofthe term “diagenesis”in eological literature, i.e.,in1868, inVon Guembel’s major work Geognostische Beschreibung des ostbayerischenGrenzgebirges.Manydecadespassed,however,before researchinto diagenetic processes and products really got underway.It could bestatedthat up to the 1950’s, the topicofdiagenesisformedonlya very minorpartofgeologicalresearchliterature(see for example, Trask,1951,

and Sujkowski, 1958). Rapid developmenttook place during the next fifteen years,asillustratedbythe scope and contents ofthe above-mentioned work Diagenesis in Sediments. Thedemandforthatbookwassuchthat the needarosefor a newand revisededition.Becauseofthe scope ofthe subjectand the proliferationof literatureon the subject, it has beennecessaryto publishthe new editionin twovolumes.Thisreflectsthegrowthwhichhasoccurredinthe research into diagenetic phenomena since the publicationofthe first edition.
