The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers

A stoner comic penned by Gilbert Shelton and Paul Mavides, considered a classic. Many recurring characters around the Freaks are cult heroes in their own right (such as Dealer McDope - purveyor of fine and imported weed). Published by the (in)famous Rip Off Press.

The three Fabulous Furry Freak brothers were:

Freewheelin' Franklin: Similar in appearance to "Billy" from Easy Rider. Cowboy hat, fringed jacket, cleft chin. Generally scowling and conniving. Has no idea who his real family or father was, although it's hinted in the strip that it is Popeye.

Phineas Freakears (in one strip, continuity be damned, they called him Mr. Freek): A guy with octagonal glasses, overalls and a dandelionlike head of wiry hair perfectly mingled into a thick beard. Has a pointed, sharp nose, a mad scientist ability to perform engineering and scientific miracles, and amazing cooking skills. From a family in Texas, his father is a member of the John Birch society.

"Fat" Freddy Freekowtski: Obese, blonde curly headed man with a moustache/beard combo (shaved chin) that makes him look like "Lemmy" from Motorhead. Dim witted, the butt of jokes and invariably and comicly ill-fortuned. For some strange reason the other Freaks have him go out and buy them drugs even though every single time he manages to get "burned". Owns a mangy cat. From a large family in Wisconsin, he returned at one point and very nearly ended up having intimate contact with his own sister (not knowing where he was or who she was).

The Freaks are often involved in zany adventures in quintessential 70s Cheech and Chong style. Many of the strips revolve around them being paranoid about "the big bust" which never seems to happen. They've been almost executed by firing squad in Mexico, ended up as an unsigned but legendary bar band (they thought the concert was a failure and never returned, though agents scoured around for them for months), and even ended up morphing into live action actors for one story.

At the base of every page is a parallel storyline involving Fat Freddy's cat, whose constant spraying of Freddy's stuff and neverending war with the cockroaches in the house make for an amusing mental sorbet between pages.
