The more I think about it and the older I get, the more I'm convinced that walking is the best all around form of exercise. What is it about walking that makes it so advantageous and beneficial? For staners, our bodies are designed to walk. Everyone knows how to do it. Walking requires no equipment and can be done virtually anywhere. But most importantly, walking carries the least risk of injury of any form of exercise I know. And over time walking can provide all the health benefits of more intense exercise. Another unique aspect of walking has to do with cross patterned movement. When we walk, our arms and legs move in opposite directions just as when we were infants learning to crawl and moved our limbs in a cross pattern. Many studies have correlated this kind of movement with healthy electrical activity in the brain. The research suggests that cross patterned movement stimulates brain and muscle development not only when we're infants, but throughout life. Letting our arms swing when we walk also develops healthy brain waves.
Further advantages of walking are that it gets you outdoors, where visual stimulation, especially in a natural environment, can be very pleasant. Walking is also a wonderful social activity, used in all cultures to bring people closer.
Walking is one of the most natural activities of everyday living. Now would be a great time to rediscover the advantages of walking more in the performance of daily routines (undermined by our dependence on cars and our increasingly sedentary habits). I hope this program will help you realize the countless benefits of walking for many years to come.
