Chancellor Emeritus of The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, who first suggested to me that I incorporate the Jewish philosophy course material that I had been teaching at the Seminary into a volume directed specifically to the Jewish lay person. Indeed, it has been my good fortune, these past thirty-five years, to have studied and taught at the Seminary under the leadership of three chancellors, all giants of Jewish scholarship. Professor Louis Finkelstein gave me my first opportunity to teach Jewish philosophy, and Professor Cohen’s successor, Professor Ismar Schorsch, has been a steadfast source of encouragement and support.
